Oil Mist Extraction

METU-FORM for the Process Industry

Ventilation ducts for metal working installations and production sites: extraction of oil mist, coolants and emulsions, machine hookups.

Applications

Machine tools, metalworking, rolling mills, CNC machining (turning, cutting, milling, grinding, drilling), process Industry, metalworking, industrial plants, production facilities, automotive industry.
Suction systems for aerosols (oil mist) and cutting fluids,  extraction of welding steam and  fumes.
Industrial plant builders, design offices, architecture firms.

Work Safety

Oil mist pollutes the workplace (www.baua.de), can generate health problems over the long-term (respiratory infections, accidents due to slippery floors) and may even affect other manufacturing processes.
Thanks to the METU-FORM, complicated and often questionable improvements in an attempt to make the air ducts oil-tight belong to the past (see references).

Common Problems

Spiral seam ducts are not ideal for the process industry, as they are usually not oil-tight over the long term.

Such connections are no exception

Solution

The METU-FORM system offers an optimal solution that does not require any additional sealing measures. (Click on the image to enlarge it)

The METU drain fittings ST-K allow to remove any liquids (condensation, oil, etc.) which might have accumulated in the air ducts.

Aerosol-tight Airducts and Connections

Aerosols are fine particles (solid or liquids) in suspension in the air, such as dust, soot, fumes, water particles, oil-mist, etc.

These particles often condensate when pressure and/or temperature changes occur, and deposits occur within the ventilation airducts. This is a current phenomenon in kitchen ventilation and the process industry where air filled with oil and coolants mist has to be extracted.

Air-ducts for such applications must consequently outperform the class D according to the DIN EN 12237 and comply with the ATC1 class according to the DIN EN 16798-3.

The following METU products have been designed for such applications and do not require any additional measures to achieve the required tightness:

  • METU-FORM Straight Ducts, laser-welded, with formed-on "parallel" flanges
  • METU-FORM fittings, laser & MIG welded, with formed-on "parallel" flanges
  • METU-FORM SRX joining clips fitted with an NBR or Silicone gasket

The METU-SYSTEM access doors with NBR or Silicone gasket reach the air-tightness class D (DIN EN 12237) or class ATC2 (DIN EN 16798-3).

Special Version for Inclined Air-Ducts (upon request)

It is recommended to install the ducts with a certain gradient (slope) in order to allow liquids (condensation, oils, liquid detergents, emulsions and other liquids used in metal working processes) to flow towards the drainage points (see also the drain fittings and special elbows).

1.   90° Elbow plus about 3°
2.   Spacial 3° degrees ebow
3.   Elbow with a non-standard angle
4.   Slope
5.   Drain fitting ST-K
6.   Oils (process industry), condensation, liquid detergents (Kitchens), etc.

The oil stays inside the METU-FORM air-ducts. The drain fittings ST allow to remove the oil or condensation at selected locations.

Resistances to Chemicals

Chemicals and oils are available in very different qualities. Their properties vary depending on their concentration, operating temperatures, possible mix with other chemicals and the eventual presence of impurities.

This is why gasket manufacturers only provide general information about the resistance of their products to various chemicals.

Is is therefore necessary to ask your suppliers of oils, solvents and other chemicals which materials (galvanized steel, stainless steel, etc.) and which gaskets (PE, EPDM, NBR, Silicone, etc.) they recommend.

In view of the above it is advisable that the client runs some tests in order to assess if the gaskets are suitable for the intended application.
